In a job interview with the President of a company...

For a position I wasn't exactly qualified for...

The interviewer asked me,

"If I were to call your previous employer, what would they tell me about you?"

Without hesitating I said...

"I'd encourage you to call. Truthfully they'd probably ask for you to send me back to them."

He leaned back in his chair with a surprised look on his face.

We chatted a bit longer, I was asked a few more questions, put through some demo tests, and left with a good feeling.

The next day I got a call with an offer.

That sales position didn’t have any members without a degree.

There also wasn’t a single guy under 40 in the position.

I was 25 at the time…

I worked there for a long time before the impact of that exchange was ever shared with me but…

The manager told me, that he had never seen anyone so confidently speak to the president of the company like that.

He shared that the president wasn’t only impressed by the response, but how I didn’t even have to think about it…

He shared with the manager, “I don’t care if he’s young or doesn’t have a degree… I need to have a guy like that on my team.”

Which made me feel great because, that confidence is second nature to me now. He’s right… most sales teams would want a guy like that.

and confidence is the only factor.

I believe in myself.

I’m not afraid to make mistakes.

I’m not afraid to learn tough lessons.

I’m not afraid to ask questions.

But even when I don’t know, even when I have no experience… I know that I’m going to do what it takes to figure it out.

Sometimes you won’t have all of the answers, sometimes, you won’t have the slightest clue.

But when you believe in your abilities.. it doesn’t matter.

You’ll figure it out.

The difference between the 1% and everyone else - the 1% never give up on themselves.

You can get there too. You just need some confidence.
